How I Became a Career & Success Coach

When I was 30 years old, a need to give back to others appeared in my life. I had completed a Masters in Psychology, which gave me an understanding of how to help people move through life changes. I volunteered as a peer counselor at a women's center for 2 years working with women who were facing difficult challenges. While humbled by the trust they placed in me, I also found my strengths in listening, feedback, perspective, fearlessness and active optimism. My natural talents are in strategy, analysis, intuition and action, so I became a business coach.

Since 1995, I have worked as a transition and leadership coach with thousands of talented leaders from Fortune 500 companies, non-profits and associations, federal and state government and entrepreneurs. I have worked with CEO's, CFO's, CIO's, Senior Managers, Middle Managers and Individual Contributors in about 95% of all professions and industries. I have not coached an astronaut nor a phlebotomist, but would love the opportunity.

Clients find I ask the right questions, probe for understanding, communicate observations and have the business acumen to be a strategic business partner.

TalentRight was launched in 2007 with the mission of helping organizations and individuals maximize their greatest asset: their talent. As a small business owner, I am qualified to coach other entrepreneurs on the adventure of "building a business while still having a life."

Why I Work With Business Professionals

I have 14 years coaching and consulting experience. A majority of that was working for international career management firms in Melbourne, Australia (a city of 3 million) and Washington DC. Aspects of my background which clients find valuable:

• a successful international business career in Australia for 6 years,
• the privilege of coaching business people worldwide, and,
• continual personal and professional re-invention propelled by 6 national and international moves in 23 years.

What are some of your personal values, beliefs and philosophy.

I follow the International Coach Federation's Code of Ethics. I believe my clients are experts in their life/work and that they have the creativity and resourcefulness to create the solutions they are seeking. My coaching philosophy is:

• You decide what you want to achieve, become, do and experience. You set the agenda. My only agenda is your happiness and success. I will help you get really clear on what is important and gain laser-focus on making it happen in your life. Intentions become reality when you are able to clear the distractions and tolerations from your path. You get a new freedom to explore, self-discover and finally make progress toward what you most want.
• Barriers are only temporary, and they often exist only in your mind. How many times have you spent more time thinking of reasons why you can't do something as opposed to why you can? What you commit your energy to becomes your reality. Outcomes don't care if they are positive, negative or neutral. I work with people who want to steadily move toward positive futures.
• Balance is not a state of perfection, but of making choices. Choices that fit how you want to live your life. Often, we excel in one area (work performance) to the neglect of other areas (exercise, time for friends, family). Feeling overwhelmed and in a hurry means that balance is missing. We work together to move toward, not away from balance in all spaces of your life.

Major Accomplishments

There is a pattern in my life of moving to new locations across the country. . . and world-sight unseen. Three times in 7 years. I like the unknown, creating possibilities from immense change and the thrill of reinventing myself. My big leap of faith was moving to Australia again, sight-unseen, with $3500. I didn't know one person there and within 6 months established a successful coaching career without prior experience. Although I had made geographic transitions in the US previously, this new cultural immersion fine-tuned my competencies of adaptability, thinking in the moment, resourcefulness and rapid assimilation of new ideas. I also became really good at driving on the wrong side of the road - not so much.

I am the Reinvention Coach for people who want to push themselves a bit further, explore the unknown, take a smart risk and make small or large shifts in how they live their lives.

My Passion

Nothing thrills me more than traveling to a new country, ditching the maps and plans, and just exploring the people, places and passions of a culture. My favorite places to recharge are Melbourne, Australia; Barcelona, Nice, Paris and anywhere there is a beach.

My husband and I live in Des Moines, IA, with 2 cats imported from Australia.
